Why Fast Charge EV's?

Q:Why fast charge electric vehicles?

A: To extend their range and improve their utility beyond commuting.

Two factors are key for the EV to become the commuting vehicle of tomorrow…battery technology and charging infrastructure. As lithium ion batteries get better and cheaper, consumers will be able to afford cars with  bigger batteries — enough to cover the average home to work commute with energy to spare. As charging stations reach parking lots people will plug in at work, home and while they shop. With these options,  commuters will choose EVs to drive to work and for other light intercity travel. However, if the EV is to be used beyond commuting we must extend its range! Consumers will not accept a car that cannot go as far as they want to drive.

Fast charging is the key!

Batteries designed for fast charging can be recharged within 10-20 minutes, as opposed to 8-12 hours with standard batteries and chargers. Consumers will be able to pull into fast chargecharge up while they shop or get a bite to eat. Larger fast charging stations will be able to store the power delivered and replenish it at night, when the rates are cheaper. And proponents of battery exchange stations have decided on fast charging in order to reduce their overall battery inventory. Forward-looking companies realize how important fast charging is for EV adoption. There are now dozens of demonstration projects underway in the United States, Europe, Japan and China and the lessons learned here will certainly affect the charging landscape of tomorrow.

The bottom line: deploy fast chargers and increase EV adoption!
